Top 5 Travel Experiences

In most countries I do at least one activity or tour, and though I’ve enjoyed all of them some stand out more than others. The weather, people, and the guides make a big difference in the experience but these are ones I would feel confident recommending to anyone up for a little adventure or fun.

1. Wine Tour in the Duoro Valley – Portugal

Unsurprisingly this is one of the most fun day tours I’ve ever been on. Stunning views, a boat ride, wine (local port wine included), and a delicious meal, what more could you want?!

2. Hot Air Balloons – Turkey

A big bucket list item of mine and wow did it live up to my high expectations! Watching them rise with the sun from our rooftop in Goreme, Cappadocia and going up in one in Pamukkale is unforgettable If you can handle heights, definitely do what you can to go up in one, but to me there is nowhere more exciting than the hot air balloon capital of the world. If you can’t hack the height but happen to be in Turkey, it’s at least worth finding a good view and the 5 am wake-up call.

3. Ha Giang Loop – Vietnam

A route through northern Vietnam on motorbikes by day and homestays with karaoke and unlimited happy water at night, this loop is so freaking fun and pretty. It weaves through the mountains with some of the best views I’ve ever witnessed. The three tour groups most recommended to me were Mama’s, Buffalo, and Jasmine, but there are plenty of other groups you can book with. You can choose from 4 days 3 nights or 3 days 2 nights, and you can drive it yourself if you are experienced on a bike or have a local driver referred to as an “easy rider.” I recommend having someone drive you and doing the 4D3N.

4. Snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef – Australia

My snorkelling experience is somewhat limited, but for some reason, I was still surprised by just how pretty the reef is. I booked a 3-day 2-night sailing tour through the Whitsundays and you get plenty of opportunity to snorkel the outer reef over that time. The ocean life was mesmerizing and I understand why it’s one of the natural wonders of the world.

5. Canyoneering – Philippines

On the island of Cebu is a gorge with milky blue running water that you make your way down by jumping off cliffs, floating down the river, and climbing over rocks. The cliff jumps are varying heights and the guides are well-versed in the area so it felt completely safe but there are alternate ways to get down if you don’t want to do some of the jumps.
