What makes a country ideal for solo female travel? For me it’s safety, primarily English speaking, a backpacking community, and ease of getting around. The list is geared toward the girlies who are newer to solo travel as safe bets to have a successful trip.
Iceland
This was my first solo country, and I’m glad it was. Road-tripping and appreciating the natural beauty the country has to offer are things that are easy and comfortable to do alone. Coming from Canada there was very little culture shock and driving on the right side of the road is always a plus. The only issue with solo travelling here is the price tag!
New Zealand
Similarly to Iceland, this country is stunning and as far as I’m concerned you don’t need a friend to look at mountains and fjords with. It’s also a little easier on the wallet which is always a plus when you are covering all the expenses on your own. Many solo travellers do the hop-on hop-off bus which is more budget-friendly, but if this gives you anxiety like me and you want to be in control I still think renting a car and driving yourself is the way to go! Driving on the left/opposite side of the road is intimidating but not as bad as you think it will be I promise!
Thailand
With young backpackers galore and plenty of hostel options to choose from, Thailand is one of the most fun places to solo travel. It’s easy to make friends and very affordable which is ideal if you’re young and trying to stretch your dollar. As long as you’re open to making friends you might show up alone but you will have other people to hang out and travel the country with in no time.
Montenegro
This little country packs a punch and is well worth your time. It’s extremely beautiful and is tucked into an area of eastern Europe right below Croatia that isn’t on everyone’s travel radar yet. This leaves you with fewer crowds and more hidden gems. I felt like I was truly on an adventure here and met more like-minded travellers who are there to discover more than they are to get their next Instagram pic (nothing wrong with that either, but also excuse me you’re in my way)!! I recommend visiting in shoulder season as it is starting to pick up in price and people as the word spreads on how truly special this country is.
Canada
As you may have noticed by now, I favour countries that are nature-heavy and best seen by road trips. I love my country and can’t recommend visiting enough. It’s safe and with English being the main language it’s easy to get around. The rocky mountains can rival some of the best views I’ve seen around the world. It’s a massive country so unless you have time on your hands I recommend focusing on one area like the West Coast, the Rocky Mountains, or the Maritimes.
