If you’re on a road trip, frequenting rural towns and cities for work, or looking for an activity on your day off, you will need to eat at some point. Instead of searching for the nearest fast-food chain, you might want to try something different with a homestyle feel. I think part of what makes Saskatchewan so special is all the rural communities and the hospitable people within them. If you’re from here, you will know we are not a fancy place or expect fine dining, but rather simple dishes made with heart.
The Garden Club, Wolseley
This Cafe and Wine bar is a bright, welcoming space perfect to grab a coffee and a baked good, or a meal and a drink. Food options change daily, keeping things interesting.
The Grotto, Vibank
Down Highway 48, you will find this restaurant worth making a special trip for. They are open weekends and are known for serving authentic Mexican cuisine on Friday nights, and Saturday is Barbeque. The menu is pre-set, so all you have to do is book your reso in advance and show up for a night of great food and drinks (some of which are served in a pineapple or watermelon)!!
Sister’s Bistro, Montmartre
A little bit further east down Highway 48 is the town of Montmartre. If you are visiting or passing through, I highly suggest stopping here for a bite to eat. They have a daily lunch special that is recommended, but they also have regular soup, salads, sandwiches, etc.
Nightjar Diner Co., Swift Current
With Swift Current being on the number one highway between Regina and Calgary, it is a popular place to stop. It was on this route that we decided to try this diner instead of the typical fast-food options, and I’m so happy we did. The menu consists of many Asian-inspired dishes such as Korean fried chicken sando, bao buns, and kimchi smash burgers, along with western favourites like BLTs, grilled cheese, and fries.
Marie’s Eatery and Catering, Southey
The food here is great, and the prices are simply unbeatable if you ask me. Some of my favourites are the Grilled Reuben, Monte Cristo, and Chicken Club Wrap, as I eat in my car. The all-day breakfast and classics look great if you can sit in to eat. If you are going out of your way to eat here I suggest calling ahead to double-check they will be open, as they close at times for catering and such.
Freebird, Lumsden
The nicest restaurant on the list and the closest to Regina, this place is a must-try. Everything is delicious and elevated, on par with the type of dining you’d expect in cities. Delicious for both lunch and dinner with cocktails/beer/wine to round out the meal.
Red Barn, Moosomin
The focus here is fried chicken, but they have a full menu of wraps, salads, burgers, etc. They have a nice, large dining room and lounge with a covered patio, making it a comfortable place to stop and eat year-round.
Indian Head Bakery, Indian Head
This bakery has been around for a long time, and there’s a reason why. Some of their products can be purchased in Regina like their bread which is a staple in my home, but it’s still worth visiting to try the fresh-baked items such as donuts, cookies, etc. They have a small menu with sandwiches and soups as well, but the goodies here are the highlight in my opinion.
I hope you get to check out and enjoy some of these special places! Keep in mind that opening hours will vary, with many places being closed on Sunday and Monday. I know the list is missing some great ones that I plan to visit when I can (I’m looking at you Trigo, Lefleche and Harvest Eastery, Shaunavon), so drop a comment below if you have a tried and true place you’d like to recommend.
