What to Pack for Costa Rica

I spent two weeks in Costa Rica in January 2025. I did various activities including some small hikes, ziplining, hot springs, wildlife tour, and a boat trip to an island. Depending on where you go you will want to pack for rain and shine as well as being active and beaching it. Here is what I packed for Costa Rica.

What to pack for Costa Rica

Athletic Wear

Leggings – nice for travel days, ziplining, and night jungle walks

Loose and Biker shorts

Skirt/skort – cute and comfy

Tanks – normal and sweat-wicking, you’ll thank me later

Where I shop: Artitzia, Lululemon, H&M

Everyday

Shorts – denim and poplin shorts that are easy to throw on and go with anything. Linen or cotton would also work well.

Tops – variety of tanks and t-shirts to wear during the day and out at night

Pants – comfy pants such as these poplin ones or linen to throw on for the cooler evenings or over swimwear

Zip-up sweater- for the plane and travel days or colder climates (eg. Monteverde)

Button-up – to wear over shirt and swimwear

Cross-body bag – acts as a purse for phone and wallet but also big enough to hold sunscreen, bug spray, sunglasses, etc. and comfy to carry around

Where I shop: Aritzia, H&M, Oak and Fort, Hollister

Outerwear

Waterproof jacket – it’s likely you’ll encounter some rainy weather during your trip

Waterproof shoes – for the rain, waterfalls, hot springs, getting on and off of boats

Sandals – comfy everyday sandals for roaming around and flip flops for the beach or slipping on at your accommodation

Runners or hiking shoes – for heavy walking days and activities

Where I shop: New Balance, Birkenstock, North Face, Teva

Beachwear

Swimsuits – I took three, you could bring less if you’re not fussed. If planning on surfing also bring a one-piece (or swimming costume as some of you may call it)

Cover-up – terry cloth or linen bottoms, sarong, big t-shirt, or a loose dress to wear over bikinis

Travel Towel – A small quick-drying microfiber towel is essential for beach days and hostels

Where I shop: 437, Kotomi Swim, Feline Swim, Amazon
