Don’t get me wrong, travelling with diabetes can be hard and mentally taxing. Luckily, I am someone who doesn’t get too hung up on it and I can see the humor in all the mistakes and mishaps which makes my travels and life a little easier. Here are some funny anecdotes from my travels that you can learn from or possibly relate to. I can be quite a mess, so I hope you enjoy!
In Greece, I forgot to fill my pump with insulin before dinner, so I used my friend’s pump to bolus insulin for my meal. This picture is a little devastating but too good not to share.
My continuous glucose monitor ripped off while floating down the river during canyoneering in the Philippines. As you can see my lifejacket thankfully had a zipper pocket for me to stick it in so I could keep the transmitter.
In Cambodia, I slipped climbing over some rocks and fell into a puddle of ocean water. I swore I broke my thumb – I’m cursing and slow breathing through the pain, my phone floating in the water, and then I remembered my pump isn’t waterproof and I had to snap out of it and pull myself out of the water onto a rock. Luckily my pump didn’t get wet but falling is always funny.
In Iceland, I visited the Blue Lagoon on a sunny, balmy 13°C day. I was wearing my CGM on the back of my upper arm and ended up getting a tan line around the large oval where my CGM was because of the spring sun and reflections off the mineral water. It lasted all summer.
Me lugging around this duffel bag to carry all my meds on top of my suitcase for 6 months. Please ignore my neck pillow in a bag, I lost it the day before and grabbed it from the hostel lost and found on my way out (classic).
While Tipsy Tubing in Pai, Thailand I almost lost my pump. I left it in the box of the truck that picked us up at the end of the river with the rest of my things. My pump fell out of my clothes at some point and I didn’t realize until we got back to the hostel. Thankfully someone gave it to the driver who was holding it looking at me all confused as I was searching for it in my drunken panic. NEVER BE THIS CARELESS lol.
